Exclusive experiences on the Camino de Santiago
A journey like no other
If you have already done the itinerary from Sarria to Santiago, you will surely be convinced that this journey is magical and you will want to repeat the experience with the previous 145 km. For many, and for us too, this portion is, from the point of view of nature, countries etc., the most interesting.
1st Day: Astorga
Free arrival in Astorga. Known to the Romans and episcopal seat. In this historic city, the French and La Plata itineraries converge. The city is presided over by its splendid Gothic cathedral, S.XV, with a Baroque façade and Renaissance elements. You can also admire the Episcopal Palace or Gaudí Palace, and also the Roman and medieval walls. Overnight stay.
2nd Day: from Astorga to Foncebadón (25.8 km)
Breakfast. Soon we pass near Castrillo de Polvazares, a town that has an impressive architectural complex that we recommend stopping at. In El Ganso where in 1142 there was a hotel and a monastery. A couple of km. further on, the ruins of a Roman gold mining operation are preserved. Arrival in Rabanal del Camino. In the entrance there is a palace which in medieval times was the Albergo dei Pellegrini. Arrival in Foncebadón, an enclave of great importance during the Middle Ages, where there was also a council in the 10th century. Overnight stay.
3rd Day: from Foncebadón to Ponferrada (26.8 km)
Breakfast. A few kilometers away, on a peak that the Romans dedicated to Mercury, stands the Cruz de Hierro, a small hill of stones with an iron cross nailed to a post on the top. It is tradition to deposit a stone brought here from the walker's place of origin. We pass Manjarin and arrive at El Acebo where its houses are surprising, with external staircases and slate roofs. We continue to the beautiful town of Molinaseca. Its emblazoned houses, and with towers, among which it is said that Queen Doña Urraca lived. Finally we arrive in Ponferrada. Name that comes from the iron bridge ordered built by the bishop over the pilgrims' pass. In the 11th and 14th centuries, the Templar castle was built. Overnight stay.
4th Day: from Ponferrada to Villafranca del Bierzo (24.2 km)
Breakfast. We leave for Columbrianos where the Roman road is preserved. After crossing Fuentesnuevas, Camponayara and Cacabelos, an important location in the Middle Ages, we will arrive at Villafranca del Bierzo, a city founded in the 11th century and where the Order of Cluny had a notable presence. The Collegiate Church of Santa María, Calle del Agua, is particularly worth seeing, full of palaces and vineyards with coats of arms. The Castle-palace of the Marquises is also worth a visit. Overnight stay.
5th Day: from Villafranca del Bierzo to O'Cebreiro (27.8 km)
Breakfast. The route begins by first crossing Pereje, a medieval-looking municipality, to then enter Trabadelo. The journey then continues to Vega de Valcarcel, a town that was born near the castles of Sarracín. We are already ascending to enter the Galician lands through Lugo. O'Cebreiro where there are still some Celtic houses, before the arrival of the Romans, where animals and people lived together to keep warm in a very mountainous area. There is also a hospital for pilgrims (9th century) which during the Middle Ages was a refuge from snow and wolves. Overnight stay.
6th Day: from O'Cebreiro to Triacastela (20.8 km)
Breakfast. Start the day by descending with beautiful views of the mountainous area. We pass by Padornelo where the order of San Juan de Jerusalen was born, created to welcome the pilgrim. You ascend briefly again to reach the highest point of the Camino on this route. We continued downhill to Triacastella. Overnight stay.
7th Day: from Triacastela to San Xil Sarria (17.8 km)
Breakfast. Shortly after Triacastella, there are two possibilities. We suggest via San Xil which will take us through some of the most beautiful woods of the entire trip. Overnight stay.
8th Day: from Sarria to Santiago de Compostela
Breakfast. Transfer to Santiago Airport or city. Santiago is a wonderful and lively city where there is the possibility of adding other days. Our journey ends with the hope that this experience has given you unique and inimitable emotions for the mind and body. Happy return…
Upon arrival you will be given the Credential. Card that, along the Camino, you will have to have stamped (at least 2 times a day) in any bar, shop, authorized accommodation... you will find them everywhere. The Credential will then be presented to the Pilgrim Office of Santiago de Compostela to demonstrate that you have traveled at least the last 100 km and obtain…The Compostela. Curious certificate written in Latin that will be a nice souvenir of your trip.
